Installing the DLink DWL-G122 USB Wireless Adapter on Windows Server 2003

Skip to the list below for the steps.

I ran into this problem today and couldn’t seem to find any good resources out there that resolve the issue easily. Installing the drivers that come out of the box will give you confusing results. The configuration application will not load and manually adding the hardware will reveal that the driver provided won’t work. (Well, if I read the box, like any other *normal* person, I should have known that.) A quick internet search will reveal that this product has been discontinued by DLink but still left some information (and old drivers) on their support website.

Now, a little background on this piece of hardware: inside it’s really just a Ralink Technology RT257x series. It has 3 “revisions” or release numbers; rev A, rev B and rev C, but I believe all of these use some variant of the 25xx chipset. So, ideally any compatible driver should do.

Some internet work and trial and error and I found one that works for my particular situation (I’m running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition RC2. My USB adapter is rev C, F/W 3.0, no other wireless adapters installed), but ideally it should go well for any Win2k3 setup.

  1. Get the driver for DLink WUA-1340 at the support site. If you already know what to do with this, goto step 5
  2. Plug in your Dlink DWL G122 USB Wireless Adapter, or plug in your cradle and attach the adapter at the end.
  3. Do the add new hardware thing, and select the option where you specify where to look for the driver.
  4. Point it to the Win2K driver. Then complete the install.
  5. Enjoy wireless connectivity on your win 2k3 box. and don’t forget to thank me. lol.
